The 1998 Ford Explorer once again topped the sport-utility vehicle market in US sales. Changes were minimal in the exterior and interior design and detail, except for some slight tweaks to the front grill. Under the hood, though, it was a different story; the high-power 5.0 liter V-8 engine (standard on the Eddie Bauer and Limited trims, and optional on the Sport, XL, and XLT trims) got a design overhaul, boosting its output to 215 horsepower. Buyers who weren't looking for that much power had the choice of two 4.0 liter V-6 engines, including a single overhead cam model with a 205-horsepower output. Ford also made some refinements to the rack-and-pinion steering system on the '98 Explorer, and reviewers praised its improved agility. Still, the '98 Ford Explorer appealed mainly to SUV buyers drawn by its roomy interiors, big cargo capacity, and rugged construction, not to drivers looking for a high-performance vehicle. However, its four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options did appeal to people wanting a tough vehicle for off-road adventures.
