The 1961 Ford Thunderbird was the first of the third generation of T-birds, affectionately known as the "Bullet Birds" or "Project Birds." This generation was decidedly sleeker than its predecessors, and had a smoother ride and better cornering as well.
The grille was lower and more subtle, while both head- and tail-lights were round. The interior was equally smooth, with a curved dash. It also featured a "swing-away" steering wheel, which would swing to the side to allow easier entrance and exit.
While the look of the car was seemingly following the US's space-obsessed rocket ship era, the engine went in the other direction, dropping in power; the only available engine was a 6.4-liter, 390-ci V8 rated at 300 horsepower, down from the optional 350 horses in the Lincoln engine the prior year.
72,851 of the Thunderbirds were sold, 10,516 of which were convertibles.

(8 reviews)The T-Bird is still a wonderful road car.
performance wise it was no sports car.on the muscle end it was all power. 105 and only half throttle. solid body no rattles. beautiful styling. a bit fuelish and high octane to boot, but a fun ride even the wife fell in love with it
I own a 1961 Ford Thunderbird and I just love it. I think that car was made with me in mind. Sitting behind the wheel I have the perfect cruzing arm rest that is the top of the drivers side door. I love the looks. It's not the most popular look but it's beautiful. Sure there are things that I had to change that I found Ford didn't do a very good job when creating this car like the Radiator. This car would away over heat when I would hit a hill. I took it to a race shop and had them biuld me a radiator that would keep my car cool. It cost me a some money but well worth it. I hate the blinker switch. I bought a new one years back and the new one acts like the old on. Doesn't hold when turned on. Do Ford failed at the too. Will have to come up with something for that. I haven't restored it yet due to no money. So I was thinking of rat rodding it while I work on the body. And under the hood. So Sure there are things I dislike about the car but I have had this car for over 16 years now and I would never dream of selling it. One look at this car and it brings out the boy in me.
This car is so unique in it's styling - totally 1961, totally beautiful. Back in the day it was a pretty good performer, but couldn't compete with much today. It is rock solid, however. The reason you drive one today is because you like the look inside and out and it just makes you feel happy. One of the things I really like and am always amazed at is that everything can be taken apart relatively easily, cleaned or repaired and put back together again.
Bought this car for $75 when I was 15, worked on for a week, found out from a local mechanic that the engine was trashed, and got my money back from the owner....should have kept it!. Well, maybe not. It was missing the carb, all 4 wheels, radio, battery, and probably a lot more I never knew about. It was hit in both rear quarters. I have a feeling that mechanic went back and bought it himself. Who knows!?
