1996 5.8 Bronco, what kind of transmission fluid is needed?

Asked by Mario Nov 20, 2019 at 12:26 PM about the 1996 Ford Bronco Eddie Bauer 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 96 Bronco and I am changing the trans oil. Converter and radiator
cooler included. I called Castrol and they have specs that Ford changed it from
Merc IV to Merc V. Other local shops say that I can use the transmax from
castrol. Who do I go with? I have been on hold with Ford customer service for
20 min.

There is no such thing as Mercon IV. Mercon was replaced with Mercon V and that is the fluid you will need. It is always best to avoid any fluid that fits multiple applications. Your local Ford dealer will have genuine Mercon V at a good price. You local Ford parts department will be able to confirm the information I gave you.
