Swapping a 86 350 into an 89 suburban

Asked by Jan 11, 2017 at 05:46 AM about the 1989 GMC Suburban R1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have 1989 gmc suburban with a 350 tbi. I found a
good deal on a engine out of an 1986 suburban.
How hard would this be to swap?

An 86 and the 89 should both be Vortec engines not TBI so swapping would no big deal, there maybe some connection differences on the sensors but you could just swap those too.

Ah, no they are not Vortec, the 5.7L (350) came out in 1996. These engines will interchange. You just may have to change the intake, and associated parts.

Odd my 86 Chevy was a Vortec and my coworkers 89 Chevy truck was also a Vortec, maybe it was where they were manufactured, possibly Canada.

Well the 4.8L came out in those years.

Right but those were V6 engines, and they were also Vortec.

Right, If you look at the intake in how it is bolted down the Vortec has less bolts to hold it down on the 5.7L

Plus the aluminum heads, and that is why they kept loosing the intake gaskets, did them twice on my Vortec before I sold it.

Yep, still a problem with the cast iron heads, mine are cast iron.

With a aluminum intake....
