Why does my fuel gauge on my 2014 F150 read incorrectly?

Asked by Guru94V7GC Oct 27, 2020 at 11:08 AM about the 2014 Ford F-150 XLT SuperCab

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a capless fuel inlet on the truck that I just bought. During a recent trip,
my fuel gauge showed that I was just below 1/2 tank. When I stopped to fill up,
the tank let off a hissing sound as I inserted the nozzle. It shut off after only 2
gallons. Not sure what is wrong?

Possible cause, a defective evap pump. During operation the evap pump will test the fuel system to determine if there is a leak of gasoline fumes into the atmosphere. It will attempt to pull a vacuum and hold it for a little while. If the pump goes bad, and stays on, it could damage the fuel tank. I've seen f 150 fuel tanks collapse like a beer can from the pump staying on. Visually check the tank from underneath for any sign of a collapsed state. I too have an f 150 with a capless fuel inlet. You should not hear a hiss when inserting a fuel nozzle.

Continued. My owners manuel states NEVER force feed fuel when purchasing gasoline. When the fuel pump clicks off the first time, don't continue to feed fuel. To do so will force raw fuel into the canister which can be drawn into the evap pump, ruining it along with the canister. Easy fix, but very expensive parts wise.
