Catalytic Converter for 2014 Buick Enclave

Asked by Lshirley14552 May 08, 2018 at 12:41 AM about the 2014 Buick Enclave Premium FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just had my 2014 Buick Enclave with only
27,000 miles into the dealership for the
check engine light. I was told The catalytic
converter needed replaced.
I was hit head on a few months ago at
about 60mph. The Ford Ranger truck that
crossed the center line and hit me straight
on never braked and went under my
Enclave. After $20,000 in repairs I got my
Enclave back.  It should have
been replaced but I don’t make the rules.
Could that accident have caused the
catalytic converter to go bad? Should I
consider purchasing the extended
warranty on my Enclave now?

I don't see an accident making catalytic converters go bad, I can imagine it damaging the O2 sensors but I don't think your engine would idle correctly if the sensors were damaged. The way to know if your cats are bad is if there's a fried eggs type of smell when running the throttle hard.

Something seems wrong.........at only 27,000 miles the cat converter should not need replacing. I believe there is a federal law that the car makers must cover the immissions on cars for 50,000 Do some online checking on the warranty. and get another opinion. The other option is contact your insurance company....if you are not happy with the repairs and/or you think this problem is associated with the accident, Your insurance should fight the other insurance company to get your car repaired to your satisfaction. If you think you are not going to be happy with this repaired car....make them fix it.

I don't think the cat converter is covered by no warranty company from what I know about them. I had to pay for my cat converter with a warranty, $1,500 out of pocket. I think I've read were under unlikely circumstances (rare) it might be covered and if a covered part that they refused to cover, because the inspector said the part was not needed and later that covered part failed causing damage to the cat converter, then they are obligated to replace the cat converter.
