does the steering column need to be removed to replace the turn signal switch ?

The columns that had a metal casing surrounding the switch ? No, the steering wheel must be removed with a suitable puller, or by a skilled experienced person. the steering columns that had a plastic mast jacket ? those you could remove the lower section and lift the upper for access to the MF switch on the left.

No, but the steering wheel does. Be sure to disconnect the negative (-) battery cable before beginning the repair! HTH. -Jim
