2009 Ford F-150 XLT CrewCab 4.6V8 3V...continuing failure of coil packs

Asked by Mike Nov 10, 2018 at 04:36 PM about the 2009 Ford F-150 XLT

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Made it to 214k miles before replacing all plugs and coil packs in March 2018 due to the bucking/kicking at 40-50mph...ran great for a few months, then three of the new coil packs went bad.  Shop replaced them under warranty.  Then #6 croaked about a month after that.  Shop again warranty replaced.  Went bad a third time now, plus at least two more have joined the party, will have to take it in on Monday.  Idles rough, runs rough, not enough power to accelerate hard, gas mileage dropped from 19-20 to 9.3mpg.

Try using Motorcraft coils. Had the same problem with a 99 V6 Explorer. Over the counter coil kept failing. Check a new one and it was out of spec from Ford recommendations out the box. Replaced with Motorcraft and all was ok.
