Car cuts off when cold.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an 06 Chevy TBlazer. It is cutting off
while I am driving down the road. I can be
going 70mph and the engine cuts off. The
engine malfunction light comes and and I
have to turn the key completely off for about
one minute then it will crank back up. I
recently noticed it only does it when it’s cold
outside. It’s much much worse the colder it
gets. It was about 30 degrees this morning
and it cut off on me 4 times within 30 miles. I
think my thermostat is bad in my vehicle so
my engine is not heating up properly. Could
my engine not heating up properly cause this
problem?

Temperature related issues are usually an intake leak on our platform, but that wouldn't cause your engine to cut off or go into limp mode. You probably have a check engine light on, what is the code? P1516?? You may have a throttle body issue, first thing I'd do is clean your throttle body with fuses #10 and #28 under the hood removed. As far as your thermostat.....Our gauges are useless. Hook up a scanner and see what the real temperature is.

I hooked it up to a scanner about a month ago. The scanner didn’t throw a code related to the throttle body sensor or the throttle body. I don’t have a scanner myself so I couldn’t scan it at the time when the TB shuts off. It did throw several codes. One saying the engine was operating at too low of a temp. I will try cleaning the throttle body next. Also someone said it could be my fuel filter. Any thoughts on that?

Unfortunately, in 06' the fuel filter is located inside the tank and is part of the fuel pump unlike earlier years where it was external. I can't see it doing that at highway speed even with a clogged filter. I'm actually helping a friend on his Trailblazer with this same problem right now. Getting narrowed down to the wiring to the connector on the throttle body, or bad throttle actuator located on the throttle body.

I was thinking about just changing out the throttle body all together if I can’t find any other solution. I had to clean the throttle bottle about 8 months ago because it was idling too slow when I came to a stop. It helped the issue I was having but it seemed to idle too high after I cleaned it. Now I am having this issue. Anyway please let me know what you find with the Trail Blazer your working on now. Thank you so much!
