When I hit the brakes in my 1998 LeSabre the engine dies

Are the brakes working normally? If not, you may have a massive air leak due to a ruptured diaphragm in the power brake booster. A leak there will cause a lot of air to enter the engine and cause stalling or at least a very fast idle when you apply the brakes. Have it checked out.
