Why is washer fluid leaking out of my back hatch?

Asked by Jun 27, 2014 at 06:25 PM about the 2007 Chevrolet TrailBlazer LS 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2007 Chevy Trail Blazer and while the vehicle was parked, with the engine turned
off, I can hear an electrical relay or pump running. I then heard what sounded like water
being poured onto my driveway. I walked around the vehicle and saw washer fluid pouring
out of the back hatch.

You answered your own question, the water pump on the windshield washer reservoir is running. You'll have to diagnose why. Have the wiring checked.

Sounds like a short either at the switch, or in the ignition/windshield washer control. Normally the windshield washer will not run if you turn off the ignition. There is a short somewhere in that system. Start from the pump itself and work back. Make sure the washer control in the turn signal is not set to the run position. If this is a one time thing for the system, it may be just a hick-up in signals and a sticky relay.
