Hey Brit, you may want to get your hands on a Chilton or Haynes manual. Each one of those will show you how to put the belt on as well as give you step by step instructions. you can get them at any autoparts store.

I am assume that your vehicle may or may not have or missing, there should be a belt guard by the water pump with the belt routing decal. Hopefully the picture shown is similar or the same and helpful.

There is typically a map under the hood either by the fan's or by on the underside of the hood. IF that doesn't work and you can't find a diagram, try routing it and see if it makes sense, if there's too much slack or too much tension, that's not the route!

There is only one belt used to drive all engine accessories. There are two different belt design depending on what car / model line that the 3.1 L engine was used on, therefore it belt routing design would vary. The picture on top showing a person releasing the belt tensioner was used more with the Chevrolet Malibu, Oldsmobile Alero and Pontiac Grand Am. The bottom picture you would more likely find in the Chevrolet Impala/Monte Carlo, Buick Century, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme or the Pontiac Grand Prix.

Danny's picture and answer that there is a diagram on the little plastic guard attached to the water pump is correct. The second drawing of pulleys is missing a pulley in the middle above the ac and crankshaft pulley before the belt goes to the tensioner.
