PCM fuse

Asked by Ram5894 Dec 05, 2017 at 10:30 AM about the 2006 Dodge RAM 1500 SLT Mega Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ok I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 and I was driving and
it just shut off. Got it pulled to the house, and figured out it
was my pcm fuse blew. I'm not a mechanic but I no it's
probably a short some where. I can take a 20 amp fuse
put it in and it starts. But sounds sluggish like it doesn't
want to start could it be a bad alternator or a short to my
altenator.

Computer needs to reset if fuse was pulled: after pulling fuse, get in and fasten seatbelt. Then turn key to RUN (but not START). Wait several seconds, you should hear a chime, then a second chime after 1-2 seconds. The computer is now reset. Replace PCM fuse. If you did not reset PCM it was likely running in open loop mode. If the starter seemed sluggish, that has nothing to do with PCM, you will have to check the starting/charging circuit. Battery, alternator, wire harness/terminals. If it blew a fuse, then something somewhere is shorted, or possibly alt. Don't put a higher rated fuse in the fuse box to force it to run, or you'll fry some wiring. Have the alternator's rectifier checked, don't rely on those auto parts store's basic check. If one diode blows it can cause a "ripple effect" spike on DC output. Good luck.
