I have a 1998 Dodge 1500 4x4 with a 5.9 liter v8 engine. The first gear is engaging "hitting" hard about 50% of the time when you start up from a stop, or from a slow rolling stop.
When it has this hard engage, It feels like someone has ran into the truck. Also,
sometimes when braking to a stop, you feel it hit the first gear hard as it is slowing down.
Other than that, it runs great and shifts great after getting started.
sticky shift solenoid inside the transmission, sometimes a service helps but usually the solenoid has to be replaced.
Thanks TennisShoes. That would make sense. Is that an expensive repair at a transmission shop?
Nothing is cheap any more they start a a hundred bucks and go up from there.
