I went to O'Reilly auto parts and asked for a coolant temperature sender yesterday and they gave me a ignition temperature switch , where does this go ? , I have a 97 dodge ram 1500 with a 5.2 engine

I have already replaced the sensor behind the alternator

Why are you replacing this sensor?

Copied from the web from a Google search that took about 10 seconds..."There are two coolant sensors on your truck. They are located on the front of the intake, threaded straight down from the top. If you look down to the right side of the thermostat housing behind the alternator you will see the wiring going down to both sensors. One sensor has a single wire, this one runs the gauge on the dash. The two wire sensor is monitored by the engine controller for fuel and ignition control. These sensors don't give a ton of problems."

Truck keeps shutting off when I put into gear

I guess I should of asked for a coolant temperature sensor

Once I get it to crank it will run till I put in forward or reverse, then it dies instantly

Can't be that , it has a new tranny I'm really puzzled now. I have read a lot where it was stated it sounded like one of the two sensors either behind alt or beside thermostat. I don't know just getting all input I can. I've already sanked a chunck of money and haven't driven it much
