Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I'm using a friend's 96 Dodge ram
1500. 4x4. The ignition cylinder
went out in it. It turned everything
on but wouldn't crank the engine
over. He ran 2 wires to the starter
relay and a toggle switch to start
it. Seemed to work fine. I went out
to start it and turned the switch on
and it turned over a couple times
and now nothing. Did using that
toggle switch end up burning up
the soleniod or what

Your battery has a dedicated cable just for the starter. The starter relay goes thru a pretty hi current relay as well. That said, the "bypass" done at the ignition switch, might be going directly into the starter circuit. While I'm not certain of the nominal current draw, I'm guessin' it's somewhere around 300-500 amps on start up, no clue as to the relay current. If you're passin' that kinda current thru a little switch not designed for that kinda power...your switch is prolly burned up.
