neg battery cable routing

95 dodge ram 1500 5.2, negative battery
cable supposed to go to alternator ? seems
like I remember it's always a hot going to alt

well mine is running backwards then I definitely have my ground cable from battery going to a post on the alternator. another smaller branch grounds to header panel..hot side appears to go down to the starter...
