I am getting horrible fuel mileage on a 2002 Ford F150 5.4. Could it be the o2 sensors going bad. no light in on
just started getting bad fuel mileage. the last tank was 13.3 mpg. the tank before that was 14.6. I use cruise when possible and keep the rpm's below 2000. KLM air filter is clean, tires are at 33 psi. Could it be the O2 sensor going bad. I don't have any light on.
KLM filter or a K&N? If it's a K&N, I've heard of people over oiling their filters contaminating the MAF elements causing a decrease in performance and MPG. Purchase some CRC MAF cleaner and clean the MAF. Go to www.youtube.com to see how it is done. Bad O2 would throw a code and your CEL would be on.
It is a K&N filter.
Tom I cleaned the MAF elements. And now checking a new tank of fuel. I will post an update when I get the data. Thanks I sure hope this helps
Bad gas mileage? That's about right. What do you consider good gas mileage for a big V8? The fuel mileage rating is only 12 to 15 MPG.
Tracy. That is your opinion. I know I should be getting over 15mpg. You have a right to your opinion.
That is not my opinion. It is a fact. As a Master Certified Ford Technician and an ASE Certified Master Automotive Technician I can say that your expectations not only exceed your grasp but reality as well. Want mileage? Buy a small car.
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel/2002_Ford_ F150_Pickup.shtml Tracy is right. Your mpg's are what they should be. 11- 15 is the rating for the 5.4l. If you want better mileage you need a different truck. Its not opinion, lol. You cant make a truck get better mpg's by simply thinking is should.
Tom I just filled up my truck and on this tank, it was 14.98 mpg. I am happier but I have a few more things to do. I will update you with the results. Thanks again
Do you have big tires or drive really fast or do a lot of city driving? My 2002 F150 4x4 with stock tires would get 18 on the highway cruising at 75. I love my K&N air filter. Since I installed it my engine oil stays a lot cleaner! The EPA highway mileage for the 2002 Ford F150 with the 5.4 engine is 17.
