Question type: Maintenance & Repair

just started getting bad fuel mileage. the last tank was 13.3 mpg. the tank before that was 14.6. I use cruise when possible and keep the rpm's below 2000. KLM air filter is clean, tires are at 33 psi. Could it be the O2 sensor going bad. I don't have any light on.

Bad gas mileage? That's about right. What do you consider good gas mileage for a big V8? The fuel mileage rating is only 12 to 15 MPG.

Tracy. That is your opinion. I know I should be getting over 15mpg. You have a right to your opinion.

That is not my opinion. It is a fact. As a Master Certified Ford Technician and an ASE Certified Master Automotive Technician I can say that your expectations not only exceed your grasp but reality as well. Want mileage? Buy a small car.

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel/2002_Ford_ F150_Pickup.shtml Tracy is right. Your mpg's are what they should be. 11- 15 is the rating for the 5.4l. If you want better mileage you need a different truck. Its not opinion, lol. You cant make a truck get better mpg's by simply thinking is should.

Tom I just filled up my truck and on this tank, it was 14.98 mpg. I am happier but I have a few more things to do. I will update you with the results. Thanks again

Do you have big tires or drive really fast or do a lot of city driving? My 2002 F150 4x4 with stock tires would get 18 on the highway cruising at 75. I love my K&N air filter. Since I installed it my engine oil stays a lot cleaner! The EPA highway mileage for the 2002 Ford F150 with the 5.4 engine is 17.

I changed my spark plugs and that helped gas mileage a little

I have a 2010 fwd F-150 w/ a 5.4 Triton. I bought it new and routinely got 18+ MPG until I put larger tires on it. With the bigger tires it dropped to 16-17 MPG. Just replaced upstream O2 sensors to clear CEL. Just checked MPG and it has dropped to 12 MPG. Will clean MAF and see what happens

I have a 2006 F150 5.4 Triton and had spark plugs and coils replaced. It stopped the back and forth from over drive when going slower but milage dropped from 12 to 8 mpg using dash menu. Should I take it back. What else could it be? Thank you

Well I have a serious gas problem issue with my 05 f150 5.4 l I'm getting 7.2 miles to the gallon which is half just over half of what I should be getting I do have oversized tires on the truck and know that it will be getting less mileage per gallon but not that last they're only 35 inch tires any ideas. Could it be I need to replace the coil packs

My 2004 F-150 FX4 with the 5.4 was getting 17mpg when I first bought it at 148,000 miles. At 186,000 it had been dropping & finally was down to 10.8mpg. Ford told me “the engine is just getting old”. I didn’t accept that & after replacing everything from coils, spark plugs, crank/cam sensors, throttle body, etc with a little gain to around 14. I finally came to the timing components. Once I replaced the VCT solenoids the mileage jumped back up significantly to over 16. After going ahead & replacing timing chain & guides getting 18 +/-. This was my experience, not saying it’s a guarantee.
