Sticking starter

Asked by GabeLaw Sep 12, 2018 at 11:02 PM about the 1995 Ford F-150 XL 4WD SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I turn my key over and everything buzzes
but when I try to crank. Nothing happens.
No clicks. Nothing. I have a new solenoid.
When I bypass my starter my truck cranks
but my starter stays engaged. I have
burned up 2 starters. I have replaced my
ignition relay and my ignition module.
Please help

Are the wires in the right place on the solenoid? Check the neutral safety switch and ignition switch. When you jump the starter are you using the solenoid? Solenoid has Two cables and One or Two smaller wires going to small solenoid terminals jumper battery to the s terminal the starter should engage and disengage normally. Did this help?

My wiring is all correct. When I jump off my starter I am sticking the shank of a screwdriver across my solenoid and my truck will turn over and crank but my stater doesn’t disengage so it burns up unless I disconnect the battery. I have 5 wires on my solenoid. And all are hooked up the same way they previously were. Could this be my engine control module or my transmission output speed sensor ??

Ford starting systems are sensitive to low voltage, put a charger on the battery let charge for 1/2 hr or so then try again if ok change battery, the circuit is pretty straightforward 5 wires One cable goes to starter, One wire from switch goes to "S" terminal, One wire from ignition system will go to R or I terminal if used, all others go to battery stud. The only other thing I can think of is if the starter is not seated through the tin plate on the bell housing. My money's on the battery.
