Ok, remove the number one spark plug. Put your finger in the spark plug hole. Have a helper bump the starter by quickly turning the ignition to the start position in short bursts. When you feel pressure under your finger, you're on the compression stroke. Remove your finger and put a long screwdriver down into the spark plug hole. Have your helper bump the starter. The screwdriver will come up out of the hole as the piston comes up to the top of the cylinder. You want to keep hold of the screwdriver, loosely, BTW. Once the piston is at the very top of the cylinder stop bumping the starter. You are now at top dead center (TDC). Now, remove the distributor cap and mark the number one spark plug wire tower on the distributor housing. Loosen the bolt holding the distributor in place. Turn the distributor housing until your mark lines up with the distributor rotor. Put the distributor cap back on and the number one spark plug in and the number one spark plug wire on. Keep hold of the distributor housing as your helper cranks the engine. Slowly move the distributor one direction then the other until the engine starts. Make your final adjustment using a timing light. Hope that helps! Jim
