my ford 350 1996 van dash charging gauge stays on negative

Sounds like the alternator is not working. take it off and have it tested. If you have a digital volt meter, set it to DCV. Voltage at the battery should be no less than 13.8 DCV to 14.7 V. with the engine running. You could go to an auto parts store also to have it tested on the vehicle.
