Brake lights not working

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My brake lights all of a sudden quit working.
Someone told me I had a brake light out
about a week ago, but I forgot about it. Today
I had someone stop beside me at a red light
and tell me both brake lights were out. I
assumed both bulbs went out. So, I went to
advance auto parts, replaced them both and
they still are not working. I replace no. 12 fuse
under the hood and no. 34 fuse under the
seat. They still are not working. I checked my
fuse under the seat with my voltage meter and
I have plenty of voltage when the breaks are
mashed. I took my back lamps back out and
checked the wiring with the brake pedal
engaged and found no shortages in The wires
or the wire harness. Someone please please
help me! Idk what else it could be! My running
or top lights work, my reverse lights work, and
my top brake light on the lift gate works when
I mash the breaks. Idk what to do.

Can anyone help a brother out? If my brake switch went out, I wouldn’t be getting any power to my fuse under my rear seat right?

Hi there, are you using LED bulbs by chance? If not, AND you're getting power at the socket when brake is depressed, I'd look at both circuit boards, which are fairly cheap. If I recall, I do believe there are more than one fuse under the rear seat for the brake lights. If you are indeed using LED bulbs, I have your answer for sure.

Hello FJ! Nope not using LED. Also, I have checked the voltage to my fuse under the seat and had power there. I could find any voltage in either brake socket. I don’t know if I checked that correctly or not also. I am going to try checking the ones I know is working and see if I get something there. Could the problem be the brake switch if I am getting power at my fuse in the back?

I am very embarrassed to say I have finally figured out my problem! I am a dumbass!!! I have fixed my brake problem. I was thinking my break light bulb was my blinker since that was the bulb not lighting up. I didn’t know my running lights and brake lights were the same bulb since my running lights were still working! If your a dumbass like me, change the top bulb, not the middle.

How does changing your top bulb work if it illuminated as normal when your headlights were on?

I'm having the same issue... All fuses have been checked and are in good condition, I replaced the brake switch, and all my bulbs illuminate when they should other than when I press on the brakes. Rear running lights, turn signals, reverse lights, and third brake light are all operational.

Jeff I don’t know how the brake light works, but even if your running lights are working, the brake lights still may not work. When you hit the brake, the light gets brighter. Maybe it’s a surge in power that causes the light to get brighter when you hit the brake. The brake light and running light is the top bulb. The middle is the blinker, and of course the bottom is reverse lights.

Try taking your blinker bulb and switching it with your top bulb. If it’s works then buy a set of bulbs and your good.

Yep... I replaced the top bulbs and that was it... I don't know why I got stuck thinking the second one was the brake light as well. Tried to look up the manual to make sure it was the second light and couldn't find it anywhere.
