Can you put a 1996 chev 305 engine into a
2001 chev

Not if the 96 is OBD1 and even if it is OBD2 it may not be a smog legal swap.

Old style engine diagnostics. 96 may or may not be OBD1/2. If it has the computer port under the steering wheel it is OBD2.
