Does AWD meet 4WD requirements in snow?

Question type: General

California has chain requirements in the Sierra during snowstorms. It calls for
4WD and M&S tires. Is AWD acceptable?

From the CHP website. Even though all wheel drive systems may differ mechanically from conventional 4 wheel drive systems, for the purposes of chain control, all wheel drive is considered the same as 4 wheel drive.
