If I run a wire off my battery to a switch and
a wire from a switch to my light source will
it slowly draw power off my batter or
should I just quick connect it to my
headlight wire that only comes on when
the key is in

If the switch is off, it won't draw power. If you leave the switch on then it will drain the battery. If you run a circuit directly from the battery get one with an in-line fuse (to avoid creating potential fire hazard). Otherwise, you can easily add a circuit to the fuse box. All the major parts shops have an electrical aisle, just look for the "add-a-circuit" kits.
