What is the price range of replacing a head gasket on a 2002 Subaru Legacy?

looking to buy a 2002 Subaru Legacy with 135k miles.  the gurus said that the head
gasket should be replaced at 100,000 miles.  outside of a repair record is there a way to
tell if this has been done and what is the price range for such a repair?
