What's the difference between 4-wheel and All-wheel drive?

all wheel drive is all the time.4-wheel drive i believe is you can drive on 2 or 4 wheels when you want to.

and in addition to what John Banys said 4x4 usually has a higher ground clearance whereas AWD will be found on cars more so than trucks or SUV'S.......
