Fair to ask for Discount on used vehicle?

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

We're looking to purchase a used car. The used car dealer had a great price
below market. The car drove well and no visible damage. So we made an
offer and agreed to buy. The dealer then produced the carfax report stating
that the car had 1 accident and was repaired by prior owner. The car is listed
$2k below average market price. The dealer has agreed to let us have an
independent mechanic inspect the vehicle. If the mechanic says it's okay to
drive, would it be fair to ask for a further discount? Comparable vehicles are
currently listed $3-$5k more than what we would pay if we purchase this
vehicle.

If a dealer is discounting the vehicle that much, I would think there is something else wrong with it. Do have an inspection done on the car. Remember, if you go to sell it, you won't get much for it. So if you do buy it, you should buy on the premise you are going to drive it till it dies.

If the accident happened recently before the vehicle was traded in I'd be very suspicious of it! There may be a problem that can't be fixed on it. Absolutely have it checked out and yes don't be afraid to offer less. Unless you already signed the contracts agreeing to buy the vehicle for the asking price. Hope that helps! Jim
