Steering column shifter .2012 1500 gmc

While truck is idling and foot on the brake
my shifter on the steering column d
Goes straight down without catching and
gears.. is it mechanical or electrical
problem??

Sounds like the engaging mechanism in the shifter might be stuck. Similar to if the button on a center shifter was stuck pressed in. Only the weight of the column shifter is enough to pull it down when the break safety is applied.
