Why is VIN needed to read a message?

Why does my VIN number have to be entered to read a message from a
potential buyer?

I'm afraid that our policy requires a valid VIN to be added before messaging between buyer and seller is reenabled. Please note however that the VIN or license plate numbers are non confidential and it is standard industry protocol to share these numbers prior to sale negotiations.
