89 Mercury Sable; Won't Start, No Noise

Asked by Brian Mar 27, 2019 at 01:36 PM

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Have an 89 Mercury Sable that was running  fine.
Now it won't start and there's no noise when you
turn the key. Battery was dead but I jumped it and
interior lights went on  and power windows work
but still no noise when I turn the key.

Use a digital multimeter across battery posts, everything off, the generic spec for a full charge is 12.6 volts, if much below that, use a charger and get it charged up. Make sure battery connections are all good. After that that, with meter leads touching the battery posts have a helper turn key to crank position, how far does the reading drop or does it drop at all. The reading shouldn't drop below 9.6 volts, if it drops way down, that isn't going to work and may be a problem with battery. Just my opinion.
