Tires and 4 wheel drive

Asked by Guru91Y7M7 Dec 10, 2021 at 08:12 AM about the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Firestone sold me 2 new front end tires and from the get go I noticed
shaking in the steering wheel and significant increase in road noise.  I went
back and my tech said the differential was going bad.  In checking with a
company who repairs these parts when I mentioned that I had two new but
different mfg tires he immediately said that "When you replace tires you
replace all 4 because the what the 4 wheel drive on this Jeep works.  Can
you validate this for me because the problem started after the new tires
were balanced, alignment done etc.  If so how do I prove this was the cause
of the issues in the 4 wheel drive system?  This is going to cost over $1600
plus cost of replacing 2 older tires that are in good condition.

Have your tires rebalanced and check for separation in the tire

Seems kind of odd that your differential would all the sudden go bad when they put new tires on it doesn't it. I have never heard of having to replace all four tires for a specific type of four-wheel drive system in order for it to work properly.

New tires always go on the back of the vehicle when you are only replacing two. You should have the old tires balanced as well and be sure all four tires are the same size. The tire manufacturer doesn't matter as long as all four tires are the same size and style. On the tire style the first character of the tire size will tell you the style. P=Passenger car. LT=Light Duty Truck. For example: P235/75R15 decodes as follows P=Passenger car, 235=235 centimeters high, 75=75 centimeters wide, R=Steel Belted Radial, 15=15 inch wheel. Some tires also have a speed rating which has no bearing on the size of the tire. Hope that helps! Jim
