Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have bought a used V50 2008 1.6D .
Yesterday when I was driving, a little uphil after a signal. I start the car and
start in first gear. There was a car behind me, so I v leg on the brake.
Since the car was not going fast and signal light going to read again, I
press the gass little more.
Then I got burning smell for long time.
Is it a problem? What can cause this problem?
I am new to car :(

How was the temperature? Was the car overheating at all? Also, how often do you run the car hard? If the car has been babied, it could possibly be carbon burning off.

The temperature seems normal. No overheating in the temperature gauge. I ran hard only when going little uphill from stop and there were cars behind me. (fear of heating the car back). Normally when its in first gear (or may be at that time I kept it in 3rd gear and tried to gas upward).
