1999 Dodge Ram 1500 clicking sound in engine

There is a clicking sound coming from the engine in
my 99 Dodge ram 1500 v8. My friend suggested
pouring transmission fluid in the breather and reving
the engine to flush it out. My Dad said not to do that.
I'm lost. Please help.
