A/C will blow cold, then suddenly blow hot...where do I look to fix this problem?

Asked by oldrick May 09, 2015 at 02:01 PM about the 2001 Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My '01 Ram a/c will blow cold air...and suddenly, start blowing hot.  I can fiddle with the
controls, and it will usually go back to blowing cold, but sometimes it won't until it's
been shut off for a few minutes, at least. Curiously, I can also hit a pretty good bump,
and it will stop blowing cold. When it is working as desired, it does great, but the
problem is a head scratcher.....any suggestions?

I know this sounds simple but check your antifreeze and make sure it's mixed properly if it is do a freon check. I recommend oil change express or whomever you trust if you cannot do this checks yourself.

I had this same problem did some research and found out that it was an hot& cold actuator that's located on the passenger side floor lower a/c box directly lower left of the glove box. Unfortunately it can't be changed unless the hold system is removed. So I plugged it out while the vehicle was stuck in the cold position unfortunately the vehicle runs cold but no heat. Quick Temporary fix, Good Luck!

I had this problem and was determined to fix it without removing the entire dash and assembly. It CAN be done. The part is $15 at the dealer and the AC blows cold now!! Cut a little pad under the carpet away, and get a 90 degree Philips screwdriver. Remove the two screws that hold the actuator in place, remove actuator, and remove collar that is the problem. Install new, reinstall actuator, and keep racing Chevy's except with the air blowing cold now!
