why is my truck running hot

I just put a new water pump on my 1989 ford f150 pickup and now its running really hot,
what have I done wrong

Been tricked one too many times by : " I just put...." Let me know if that means you put it on yourself or you had it done for you. It makes a big difference..

Ford has 2 water pumps for V8's in your year, one is clockwise direction the other is counterclockwise, they look identical except for the impeller. The parts store should be able to tell you what one you bought. That could be your problem as long as you don't have a major air pocket.

If indeed you installed your water pump yourself then let's start with what did you check before you diagnosed the problem that led to a new water pump?
