why does my truck shut off if i take my foot off the gas pedel?

trying to help my husband figure out whats wrong with his 1987 ford f150 he was driving it and the oil gage went crazy and the truck started smoking he shut it off and he changed the rocker arms cause one was bent  and it started running but it was really ruff so he gave it a tune up changed wires plugs and gas filter and it runs better but now it only stays started if you keep your foot on the gas and he cant figure out what it is

Two sensor,s can cause this,the throttle position sensor,or the crank sensor.

thank you I told him he has checked for vacuum hose leaks but he will check the sensors
