What could happen if the meter leads were connected to the positive and negative terminals of the battery while the meter and leads were set to read amperes?

It all depends on what kind of meter, some meters nothing will happen others can burn out the entire meter with all of the Sparks that go along with it.

Nothing will happen if it is set to amperes. Most meters can be damaged by leaving the meter set to ohms and connecting it to a voltage, but some have a fuse that blows to protect them.
