Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2010 F-150.  Turned key to start which
engaged the starter. Released key to the
on position and starter continues to spin
but engine does not start. Tried this a
dozen times.
Went inside to call a ride and waited 10-15
minutes. Went back and tried again and it
started right away.

My 2010 F 150 was doing the exact same thing a year or so ago. It would always eventually start up, but began to kill at stop lights, and would the exact same thing when filling with gas. The problem was caused by me overfilling the gas tank. The owners manual states not to force fill the tank after the nozzle kicks off the first time. What happens is liquid gasoline backs up and enters the canister, destroying it. Raw gas is then sucked into the EVAP purge valve ( on the top drivers side of the motor) and destroys it. During operation the vehicle will automatically go into text mode and try to pull a vacuum on the fuel tank to see if there is a leak. This causes obvious problem is there is a malfunction with the purge valve and it keeps trying to pull a vacuum. I've seen F 150 gas tanks collapse like a beer can from the vacuum placed on it by the valve. You can try to change the purse valve yourself, it is not hard and easy to remove and replace. Hopefully the canister, used to remove gas vapors, has not been damaged.
