the car is 'chugging' when driven, there is a loss of power and the engine management light is flashing

That means don't drive it... could be that engine is running rich or poor... too much gas, or not enough gas... check injectors, or spark plugs.

Most likely you have an ignition coil failure. On this vehicle you will most probably have what is known as 'pencil' coils, one per cylinder which are prone to internal shorting. A quick diagnostic plug in will confirm this.

flashing check engine light usualy means misfire. Listen to Paul. Continuing driving it like this will cause your cat to become clogged due to the misfire. Other engine damage may occur, check plugs, wires, coils, and fuel delivery system.
