Dodge Charger History

The Dodge Charger has had a long and varied life.  It's gone from street racer to movie star to luxury coupe to a four-door family sedan with an optional Hemi engine.

Introduced in 1966 at the Rose Bowl, with a body design by Carl Cameron, the Dodge Charger was considered the quintessential muscle car of the late '60s. The two-door fastback boasted several engines, most notably the 426 Hemi, the very first Hemi to be placed in a street car. Though not many sold due to cost, it reached 425 horsepower (and some say even 500).

Turned into a screen icon by "Bullitt" and "The Dukes of Hazzard," and later by "The Fast and the Furious," the Dodge Charger hit its heyday in the muscle car era. As rising fuel prices and government regulations limited its engine output, Dodge positioned the Charger as more of a roomy luxury car in the late '70s and as a hatchback when it reappeared in the '80s.

In 2006, Dodge released a new Charger, a four-door sedan designed for family use, but with the power of an optional 5.7-liter Hemi V8 under its hood, which captures some of the style and speed of the classic Charger.
