Reviews Summary

That’s not surprising, considering how people have adopted SUVs of every size as their favorite kind of vehicle. Back in the mid-1990s, the original RAV4 (Recreational Activity Vehicle with 4WD) ushered in the era of the crossover. Almost 30 years later, the 2024 Toyota RAV4 helps to set standards in its segment, available with gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid drivetrains in trim levels ranging from basic or sporty to rugged or upscale.

Verdict: Last redesigned in 2019, the current-generation RAV4 is nearing the end of its run. But if you’re looking for a dependable, roomy, and practical compact SUV, a 2024 RAV4 will serve you well for a long time to come.

Reviews Summary

The 2024 Compass Sport carries over last year's major powertrain upgrade without any increase to the base price: $28,400. That's less than the littlest Jeep, the Renegade, and nearly $10,000 below the similarly-sized Cherokee. It's also cheaper than a Ford Escape and many other compact SUVs but without the bargain-bin interior of older Compass models. While upper trims get too pricey for their britches, the base-model Compass we tested provides real value in an era where new-car prices increase every few months.

Verdict: The 2024 Jeep Compass offers good tech and impressive safety features, and it arrives with a sub-$30,000 base MSRP. The Compass still lags behind some of the competition in terms of materials quality and performance. Now in its second year past a 2023 facelift, however, it’s many strides better than older iterations.

2024 Toyota RAV4

6/10

2024 Jeep Compass

6/10

In 2024, choosing between the Jeep Compass and Toyota RAV4 came down to individual taste and requirements. The Compass, while sometimes exhibiting issues like a non-responsive tailgate and misallocated models in fleet settings, retained a certain level of allure with its various trims. Specifically, the Compass Altitude dazzled with a striking red two-tone paint job and blacked-out trim, while fleet models like the Sport faded into the background, devoid of features that would make them stand out in a crowded SUV market. Unless one opted for the Trailhawk model, distinguished by red tow hooks and distinct bumpers, the Compass’ exterior was seen as somewhat generic. Its interior, however, surpassed expectations, particularly in trims from 2022 onwards. The reimagined design showcased a central 10-inch infotainment screen, quality materials, and a cohesive aesthetic, even in lower trims.

Testing the RAV4 TRD Off-Road model highlighted Toyota's efforts to imbue a rugged, tough exterior into a vehicle more accustomed to urban environments. Its stance and design, though aggressive with dual exhaust outlets and utilitarian cladding, didn’t necessarily translate to superior off-road performance. Despite this, the Army Green color and military-themed elements might have appealed to those seeking a vehicle that looked adventure-ready. The TRD Off-Road trim, with its elevated price point, did come packed with features and options that made it versatile, if not the most unique in style. Ultimately, the RAV4’s focus on utility was evident in its design, supporting both adventure and everyday practicality without embracing a luxurious or overly distinctive look.

The 2024 Jeep Compass made significant strides in its performance metrics, shedding its previously anemic 2.4-liter engine for a more robust 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four. This new powertrain delivered 200 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, propelling the Compass with the ease and responsiveness it had long been missing. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive, the Compass managed urban commutes and highway merges with newfound confidence. Its three selectable driving modes—auto, snow, and sand/mud—along with the ability to lock torque distribution, provided versatile traction control. For those seeking ruggedness, the Trailhawk trim offered a low-range transfer case, metal skid plates, and 8.6 inches of ground clearance, although at a steep premium of $7,000 more than the base model. Despite these enhancements, the Compass's steering and handling left much to be desired, lacking the precision and grip seen in competitors like the RAV4. Fuel economy rounded out at an EPA-estimated 24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined, which placed it on par with most compact SUVs.

The 2024 Toyota RAV4 had a slightly more powerful 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. This required higher RPMs to reach max power, translating to a louder, labored engine noise. Nonetheless, its eight-speed automatic transmission, and an available torque-vectoring AWD system, contributed to a dynamic driving experience. The TRD Off-Road model, in particular, came equipped with specialized off-road suspension tuning, underbody skid plates, and all-terrain tires to tackle varied terrains like the deep mud and rugged backroads of Southern California. However, its real-world off-road performance remained modest, reflecting its design roots as a compact crossover rather than a dedicated off-roader. The RAV4 excelled in everyday use with compliant suspension, easy steering, and reliable brakes, though it generated noticeable road noise at freeway speeds. Averaging 26.6 mpg on test routes and boasting a combined EPA rating of 28 mpg, the TRD Off-Road proved somewhat fuel-efficient, with hybrid models offering even greater efficiency.

Form and function

2024 Jeep Compass

9/10

Interior space and utility were strong points for both the Compass and the RAV4, yet they catered differently to their occupants' needs. The 2024 Compass showcased a blend of clear analog gauges and a large color display offering essential information at a glance. The driver’s seat featured practical controls and convenient button placements. Headroom and legroom were ample both in the front and rear, with rear seats having vents, USB ports, and a fold-down center armrest. Despite its commendable passenger space, the Compass had smaller storage compartments. Cargo capacity stood at 27.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expanding to 59.8 cubic feet when folded. This design served utility well, especially with the optional folding front passenger seat, creating additional space for longer items.

In contrast, the 2024 RAV4’s interior emphasized practicality for recreational activities. It featured multiple storage options, from shelves and bins to rubberized knobs and an array of controls designed for maximum usability. The TRD Off-Road model came with SofTex leatherette upholstery, and functional additions from the Weather package, such as heated seats and a steering wheel, were available. Comfort was a standout feature, with the driver's seat providing eight-way power adjustment and excellent outward visibility, especially with the optional digital rear-view mirror. The RAV4 comfortably seated four adults, with the rear seat offering decent legroom and amenities like air vents, USB ports, and a center armrest. Cargo capacity was notably superior to the Compass, with 37.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats, which expanded to a competitive 69.8 cubic feet with the seats folded.

Technology

The technology suite in the 2024 Jeep Compass included a standard 10.1-inch touchscreen with the capable Uconnect 5 software, standing out for its clear display and user-friendly interface. Despite some limitations on the home screen’s app-switching functionality, the system’s overall performance was impressive. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto came standard, alongside SiriusXM, 4G Wi-Fi, and USB-C ports. Optional features like factory navigation and a wireless charging pad enhanced the tech offerings. Higher trims included an optional 10.3-inch digital instrument panel with full-screen navigation, and the Elite Group package added an array of conveniences. Available semi-automated driving tech offered moderate advancements but lacked revolutionary new features, leaving the Compass’s tech capabilities quite solid, albeit not groundbreaking.

The 2024 Toyota RAV4’s infotainment included the Toyota Audio Multimedia system on an 8-inch or 10.5-inch touchscreen. It supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM, and multiple connected service plans. Noteworthy offerings like Service Connect and Safety Connect were free for ten years, while Remote Connect and Drive Connect offered a year of free service with capabilities such as cloud-based navigation and a digital voice assistant. Despite a few interface quirks and readability issues, the system generally performed reliably. Additional features, like the optional digital rearview mirror and premium JBL audio system, further elevated the user experience. The available panoramic surround-view camera, while not included in the test model, could have provided enhanced safety and convenience.

Safety

2024 Jeep Compass

5/10

Safety was a critical focus for both SUVs, though with varying degrees of success. The 2024 Jeep Compass had not been separately rated by the NHTSA, but the identical 2022 model had received an overall four-star rating, reflecting mixed scores across different tests. Comparatively, the 2023 model earned a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS, achieving top ratings in all crash tests. Standard safety equipment included forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and a driver attention monitor. Higher trims offered adaptive cruise control and additional options like parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and a 360-degree camera system.

Conversely, the 2024 Toyota RAV4 was equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 (TSS 2.5), a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance systems. However, the lack of standard blind-spot monitoring on base LE trims stood out as a notable omission. During testing, TSS 2.5 demonstrated mixed performance, with systems like adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assist functioning adequately on straight roads but becoming inconsistent on winding roads. Safety test results for the 2024 RAV4 fell short of expectations, with the vehicle losing its Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS due to less-than-perfect results in new crash tests.
