Reviews Summary

Few cars can put a smile on your face when driving and making the monthly payment like a 2024 Civic can. That’s especially true when it comes to the hatchback version, which adds significant utility and an available manual transmission to the mix. Last redesigned for 2022, the Civic hasn’t seen any major changes since then. But next year, the 2025 Civic Hybrid arrives in both hatch and sedan flavors.

Verdict: We’re big fans of the 2024 Honda Civic. Unless you want all-wheel drive, you can’t go wrong with this excellent compact car. It’s practical and safe, affordable yet first-rate, and thanks to its available turbocharged engine is a blast to drive. Instead of getting a small SUV like everyone else, strongly consider a Civic Hatchback instead.

Reviews Summary

If you can overlook the real-world fuel economy and unimpressive crash-test ratings, then a 2024 Kia K5 is a steal of an automobile. (Don’t worry, it has an engine immobilizer system to prevent theft.) It comes in LXS, GT-Line, EX, and GT trim levels, and the only change for 2024 is standard heated seats for the GT-Line trim. Turbocharging is standard, and you can get all-wheel drive if you live where the sun often doesn’t shine.

Verdict: It’s a shame Kia doesn’t offer the K5 with a hybrid powertrain, and its performance in new, tougher-to-pass crash tests is worrisome. But there is no doubt the 2024 Kia K5 is a stylish, comfortable, enjoyable, and technologically advanced midsize car. And the price is undeniably nice.

Look and feel
2024 Honda Civic Hatchback
7/10
2024 Kia K5
8/10
In 2024, the Kia K5 and the Honda Civic Hatchback presented two distinct stylistic approaches, each appealing to different aesthetic preferences. The 2024 Kia K5, especially in the GT-Line trim and painted in the striking Passion Red Tint Coat, received widespread admiration from passers-by for its modern, sporty look. Cyclists on a back road in Southern California showed curiosity and approval, suggesting that the vibrant red color and sleek design captured public attention. The K5 had been in the market since 2021, replacing the Optima, but it seemed that many Americans were still unfamiliar with this model. The GT-Line trim positioned itself between the base LXS and the upscale EX, with a price range from $25,390 to $31,790 plus a $1,125 destination charge. Beyond appearance, the car's as-tested price of $30,530 included premium packages and a panoramic sunroof, making it quite appealing for its price point, despite some cheap-looking interior plastic. Conversely, the 2024 Honda Civic Hatchback, particularly in the Sport Touring trim with Boost Blue paint, offered a variable aesthetic experience, akin to the “Gwen” character from a Seinfeld episode. Depending on the angle and lighting, the Civic could look either dowdy or stylish. The stubby rear end was a critique point, yet overall, the Sport Touring’s styling was generally accepted. This trim sat at the top of the Civic Hatchback lineup, just above the value-oriented Sport and upscale EX-L trims, with prices starting from $24,950 and reaching up to $31,450, plus a $1,095 destination charge. Boost Blue added extra to the price, making the as-tested cost an even $33,000. The interior of the Sport Touring trim, featuring quality materials, sophisticated detailing like metal honeycomb mesh, and high-resolution instrumentation, justified this price point.
Performance
2024 Honda Civic Hatchback
7/10
2024 Kia K5
9/10
Kia's 2024 K5 came fitted with either a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine generating 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, or a more powerful 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine in the K5 GT delivering 290 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. The base engine was paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission powering the front wheels, with an all-wheel-drive option for the GT-Line trim. Driving modes included Smart, Normal, Sport, Custom, and a Snow mode for AWD, with the GT sporting an exclusive Sport+ mode. Despite an EPA rating of 31 mpg combined for FWD, our tests revealed a lower average fuel efficiency of 24.5 mpg in mixed driving scenarios. Yet, the driving experience was pleasurable, with the turbo engine providing ample torque and the suspension offering a well-blended ride quality. The GT-Line’s dynamics were predictable and controlled, although its brakes and electric steering were less impressive for more spirited driving. The 2024 Honda Civic Hatchback offered a choice between a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque, and a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine for the EX-L and Sport Touring trims with 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. This performance could be harnessed more effectively with either a six-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with paddle shifters. Our Sport Touring test car, equipped with a CVT, provided good city, highway, and mountain road driving experiences, averaging 30.2 mpg in mixed conditions. The lightweight and responsive Civic added a sense of joy to everyday tasks and twisty road adventures, though it did suffer from high interior noise levels on the highway.
Form and function

2024 Kia K5
9/10
Inside the 2024 Kia K5, comfort and utility were emphasized, although some materials, like the SynTex artificial leather, showed room for improvement. The GT-Line trim featured cloth seat inserts and standard amenities like dual-zone automatic climate control and a 10-way power driver’s seat. Most trims included heated seats, with higher trims adding ventilated seats and a heated steering wheel. Storage was generous, but the plastic linings could be noisy with loose items. The K5 provided 16 cubic feet of trunk space, accessible via a remote key fob or a hands-free Smart Trunk function. The 2024 Honda Civic Hatchback offered more interior space, particularly in the EX-L and Sport Touring trims, with added comforts like leather upholstery, heated seats, and a power driver's seat. However, the front passenger seat's lack of height adjustment was a drawback. Despite the absence of rear air conditioning vents, the Civic’s rear seat was accommodating for two adults or three children and included quick-charge ports. Cargo space was a significant advantage for the Civic, offering 24.5 cubic feet behind the back seat, significantly more than the K5's trunk space.
Technology

For 2024, the Kia K5 came with an 8-inch touchscreen in the base trim and a 10.25-inch touchscreen in higher trims. Connectivity included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the LXS, while others required a wired connection. The larger display brought in navigation, satellite radio, and Kia Connect services, enhancing the infotainment experience. A wireless charging pad and a 12-speaker Bose audio system were optional on higher trims. Voice recognition was less effective compared to Apple’s Siri or Google Assistant, making wired smartphone integration preferable. The Honda Civic Hatchback offered a basic tech package in the LX, Sport, and EX-L trims, featuring a 7-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 7-inch touchscreen. However, the Sport Touring trim stood out with a 10.2-inch digital panel and a 9-inch touchscreen, providing better graphics and functionality. This trim also included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite radio, HD Radio, and a 12-speaker Bose system. The user-friendly voice-recognition system served well for commands and queries, integrating smoothly with smartphones.
Safety

2024 Kia K5
7/10
In terms of safety, the 2024 Kia K5 was equipped with Kia Drive Wise, featuring forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and more. Optional upgrades expanded this suite to include intersection braking, parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and Highway Driving Assist (HDA), which offered semi-autonomous driving capabilities. The K5 performed well in NHTSA crash tests but received poorer scores in the updated moderate overlap frontal-impact and side-impact tests by IIHS. The 2024 Honda Civic Hatchback came standard with Honda Sensing, providing a comprehensive set of driver-assistance features. These included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and a traffic sign recognition system. Higher trims gained additional features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors. The Civic earned strong safety ratings from both IIHS and NHTSA, though it received an Acceptable rating in the updated side-impact test.
