2022 Kia K5 Reviews Summary

Last model year, as part of a redesign of its midsize sedan, Kia changed the car’s name from Optima to K5. Rakishly attractive and an undeniably good value, the new Kia K5 is an appealing choice in a shrinking vehicle segment where it faces fewer rivals with each year that passes. For the 2022 model year, the K5 wears Kia’s redesigned emblems, upper trim levels add standard features, and a new Premium option package for the GT-Line AWD installs upgraded headlights, a heated steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof, Highway Driving Assist technology, and adaptive cruise control that can automatically adjust vehicle speed for curves.

2022 Kia Forte Reviews Summary

With inflation and gas prices delivering a one-two punch to American budgets, could compact cars like the 2022 Kia Forte make a comeback? The segment is full of good choices, and you can easily get one with all of the modern infotainment technology and safety features for under $30,000. Plus, today’s compact cars are the size of midsize sedans from a decade or two ago.

Good thing Kia has updated the 2022 Forte with sharper styling and new infotainment, driver assist, and collision avoidance systems. Just in case consumers decide their next ride needs to be thriftier and more affordable.

Look and feel

2022 Kia K5

9/10

2022 Kia Forte

7/10

Kia offered a range of trim options for the 2022 K5, from the basic LX to the performance-oriented GT. The price for these models spanned from $23,790 to $31,190 before adding the destination charge. We reviewed a K5 EX, which included front-wheel drive, extra-cost paint, and the EX Premium package, coming to a total of $33,945 with destination. This price was considered attractive given the overall pricing trends in the automotive market.

The K5 boasted a unique aesthetic on the road, presenting itself more as a luxury sports sedan rather than a typical family car. Its low, elongated design was a continuation of the legacy left by the Optima. The color scheme of our test car was Glacial White Pearl paired with Ash Blue synthetic leather, accented by matte-finish wood trim and metallic highlights, giving it an upscale feel. In terms of build quality, the K5 impressed with solid controls and minimal cabin noise, contributing to its premium ambiance.

On the other hand, the 2022 Kia Forte was available in four trims: FE, LXS, GT-Line, and GT, with prices ranging from $19,090 to $21,290 plus destination. Our test model was the GT variant, priced at $26,900 including destination, equipped with the GT2 Package. The Forte received styling updates across all trims for 2022, including a new grille and lighting elements, with the GT model showcasing sporty enhancements like larger wheels and additional red accents.

The Forte GT's interior mirrored last year's design but included some updates like a new center console and an improved infotainment system. With sporty features such as analog gauges and a flat-bottom steering wheel, the interior had a dynamic look, complemented by metal accents and Germanic design cues on the seats.

Performance

2022 Kia K5

7/10

2022 Kia Forte

7/10

The 2022 Kia K5 GT came with a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine delivering 290 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. This model was the performance peak of the K5 lineup but was only available in front-wheel drive. The more common 1.6-liter engine provided 180 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, offering a balance of power and efficiency, with a fuel economy of 31 mpg combined as per EPA ratings. During our testing, it returned 29.1 mpg. The K5 handled well overall but was not as engaging or sporty as competitors like the Honda Accord.

Conversely, the Forte's GT trim featured a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine with 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. It offered a choice between a manual or dual-clutch transmission and was designed for a more engaging driving experience, especially with its sport-tuned suspension and larger wheels. The Forte GT was enjoyable to drive on winding roads, providing a solid blend of ride comfort and handling precision, although its performance under hard braking was less than ideal. Fuel efficiency for the GT was slightly below the EPA’s prediction, achieving an average of 25.8 mpg in real-world conditions.

Form and function

2022 Kia K5

2022 Kia Forte

9/10

The 2022 Kia K5 excelled in passenger comfort and space, especially with its dual-zone climate control and adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation. The panoramic sunroof added a luxurious element, although the low roofline might challenge taller passengers during entry and exit. The synthetic leather upholstery was both comfortable and attractive, enhancing the overall feel of the cabin. The trunk was spacious, offering 16 cubic feet of cargo space with an expandable area thanks to the 60/40-split folding rear seats.

The Forte GT also prioritized comfort and functionality, especially with the GT2 package, which added several convenience features such as a power-adjustable driver's seat and upgraded LED lighting. Despite its compact dimensions, the rear seating was roomy and supportive for adults, making it a practical choice for families. Its trunk was slightly smaller than the K5's but still capacious for the compact segment, measuring 15.3 cubic feet.

Technology

2022 Kia Forte

7/10

Kia equipped the 2022 K5 with advanced infotainment options, including an 8-inch touchscreen for lower trims and a 10.25-inch display for higher trims. While the larger display omitted a tuning knob, it offered additional services like a Wi-Fi hotspot and navigation. The system's interface featured unique purple graphics, which might not appeal to everyone.

The Forte's technology was similarly up-to-date, with standard infotainment features across all trims and additional enhancements in higher trims like a 10.25-inch display and a premium sound system. The system was user-friendly, although the voice recognition was occasionally unreliable. Both models featured systems to alert drivers when traffic ahead had started moving.

Safety

2022 Kia Forte

7/10

The K5 was equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance technologies, contributing to its high safety ratings from IIHS and NHTSA. Features like forward-collision warning, lane-

keeping assist, and a new cyclist detection capability ensured a secure driving environment.

The Forte also included various safety technologies across all trims, with enhancements available in the higher GT-Line and GT trims. While it performed well in most safety tests, some deficiencies in crash-test ratings from NHTSA highlighted areas for improvement.
