Reviews Summary

The all-new, third-generation X1 is zippy and fun enough to be worthy of the distinction, but with new capability and plenty of cargo space, it’s bringing the utility, too.

Reviews Summary

The Trax was launched for the 2015 model year as a no-frills subcompact crossover, designed to serve as basic transportation at an affordable cost. However, the Trax moldered in showrooms without any significant updates until the 2022 model year—when it was discontinued altogether.

But now the Trax is back in totally revamped, second-generation form. It's as big of a reimagining as you'll likely ever see in a car like this. The new Trax is bigger than before, more effort has been put into its styling, and Chevy has added the tech features that have become the norm since the original Trax was launched. Still the entry-level model in Chevy's lineup, the Trax sits below the Chevy Trailblazer, and takes aim at the Hyundai Venue and Nissan Kicks, but it was also designed to retain owners of discontinued small cars like the Chevy Cruze, Sonic, and Spark, bridging the gap between car and crossover.

The redesigned 2024 Trax launches in LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ trim levels. We sampled 2RS and Activ models on roads around Asheville, North Carolina.

2023 BMW X1

8/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10

Though BMW and Chevy aren’t generally considered competing automakers, both make crossovers worthy of attention and comparison.

The BMW X1 was all-new for 2023. The third generation showcased its zippiness and fun, yet didn't skimp on capability or cargo space, embodying a truly versatile utility vehicle. Meanwhile, the 2024 Chevrolet Trax marked a significant return, shedding its previous no-frills identity for a larger, more stylish, and tech-packed second-generation form. This renewed Trax aimed to bridge the gap between car and crossover, targeting the entry-level market with ambition and flair.

Performance

2023 BMW X1

9/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10
Performance ratings see the 2023 BMW X1 scoring a 9 out of 10, thanks to its twin-turbo four-cylinder engine that now produces 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. This enables a swift zero to 60 mph time of 6.2 seconds and introduces towing capability. An all-new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and upgraded suspension contribute to a driving experience that feels more hatchback than crossover, without sacrificing comfort or agility. The 2024 Chevrolet Trax earns an 8 out of 10, powered by a smaller, 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that offers 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. Despite the decrease in power, the new Trax is quicker to 60 mph than its predecessor, delivering strong performance and minimal turbo lag. Its car-like handling and refined ride quality exceed expectations for a vehicle in its class, even with front-wheel drive only.
Form and function

2023 BMW X1

9/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10
The 2023 BMW X1 not only benefits from a larger frame but also significantly enhances its interior space, making it roomier than its predecessor and in-class competitors alike. Front-row headroom stands impressively at 42.1 inches, and cargo space is notably superior, offering 25.7 cubic feet behind the 40/20/40-split folding rear seats, expanding to 57.2 cubic feet with the seats down. While heated seats come as an option, the overall functionality and luxury within the cabin, including the unique vertical wireless charging feature, underscore BMW's attention to detail and consumer needs. Conversely, the 2024 Chevrolet Trax, despite its overall increase in size, presents a nuanced picture regarding interior space. The redesign leads to three more inches of rear-seat legroom and a slight increase in front-seat legroom, offering a balanced space for passengers. However, it slightly reduces second-row headroom by 0.7 inches and sees a decrease in shoulder room, indicating a snugger fit. This adjustment does not detract from its appeal as a comfortable and practical vehicle, especially considering its cargo capacity. The Trax offers 25.6 cubic feet of luggage space with the rear seats up and expands to 54.1 cubic feet with them folded down. This slight improvement over the previous model demonstrates Chevy's commitment to providing practical and versatile vehicles for the subcompact crossover market.
Technology

2024 Chevrolet Trax

9/10
Technology ratings favor the 2024 Chevrolet Trax with a 9 out of 10, thanks to major upgrades including an 11-inch touchscreen and wireless connectivity features that outpace its competitors. The integration and user-friendliness of its infotainment system set a high standard for the segment. The 2023 BMW X1 receives an 8 out of 10, featuring the BMW Curved Display with iDrive 8 and comprehensive connectivity options. Despite a slight learning curve with its array of features, the system offers a seamless and intuitive user experience.
