2024 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

Verdict: The Jeep Wrangler is still one of the best off-roading vehicles available, and the 4xe's plug-in hybrid powertrain offers fuel-saving capability, along with plenty of low-end, all-electric torque. While still a bit of a bear to drive on paved roads, few vehicles offer the sort of style and rugged performance that a Wrangler 4xe does.

The Jeep Wrangler has been the star of the off-roading show for decades, only recently facing real competition in the form of the Ford Bronco. Now five years into its fourth generation, the venerable Wrangler gets a mid-cycle refresh that focuses on technology, safety, and refinement—with just a splash of upgraded capability thrown in for good measure.

2024 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

Though Mazda hasn’t redesigned its popular compact crossover SUV since 2017, a program of continuous refinement makes the 2024 CX-5 better than ever. It might even be too good. It has shared showroom space with the similarly sized Mazda CX-50 model since last year but continues to outsell its newer and slightly more expensive sibling. As it turns out, there are numerous reasons for that.

Verdict: Mazda positions the CX-5 as an SUV for active urbanites, and it serves perfectly in its role. Stylish design, taut dimensions, excellent outward visibility, a comfortable cabin, commendable quality, and impressive safety ratings make it a great choice. Plus, the 2024 Mazda CX-5 is genuinely enjoyable to drive.

2024 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

2024 Mazda CX-5

9/10

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler continued to exhibit the classic robust, body-on-frame design that has made it iconic among off-road enthusiasts. Every model shared a rugged and muscular aesthetic, though keen observers could identify subtle differences in tire size, especially on the new Rubicon X and Rubicon 392 trims. Despite these variations, the Wrangler maintained a consistent look, regardless of its powertrain options.

This year, the Wrangler showcased a redesigned grille, shorter and wider than previous versions, reminiscent of the 2023 20th Anniversary edition of the Wrangler Rubicon. This new grille design not only enhanced the vehicle's appearance but also improved airflow into the engine bay. Another notable change was the windshield-integrated antenna, replacing the traditional antenna that was prone to snags during off-road adventures. Furthermore, Jeep offered 10 new wheel designs, adding more customization options for buyers.

The Wrangler was inherently designed for adventurous escapades, featuring various roof options, including traditional soft tops, full hard tops, and retractable sunroof options over the front seats or the entire cabin. True to its trailblazing roots, the Wrangler allowed the windshield to fold down, and the doors could be removed entirely. For those seeking less extreme modifications, the options ranged from full doors and half doors to Mopar tube doors.

In contrast, the 2024 Mazda CX-5 retained much of its design from the 2017 second-generation model, with only minor updates. This enduring design continued to impress, giving the CX-5 a modern and appealing look. Our test model, adorned in the new-for-2024 Carbon Turbo trim, featured a Zircon Sand paint and distinct Terracotta leather seats with black artificial suede inserts, as well as a black headliner. The paint, similar to that used on other Mazda models, complemented the CX-5's gloss-black exterior detailing. An alternative premium Rhodium White paint was also available.

Mazda's updates for the 2024 model year included improved fuel economy for base engine versions, the removal of a previously available machined-finish 19-inch wheel design, and the incorporation of wireless charging along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility in several trim levels.

The CX-5 continued to offer a refined and upscale appearance, combining traditional Mazda styling with recent enhancements. This compact crossover, available in various trims such as the Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, and Premium Plus, ranged in pricing from $29,300 to $36,500, plus a $1,420 destination charge. The Turbo models, including the Carbon, Premium, and Signature trims, were priced between $37,000 and $40,600, plus the destination fee.

2024 Jeep Wrangler

2024 Mazda CX-5

Jeep's 2024 Wrangler line-up boasted several powerhouse options. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine generated 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. In contrast, its plug-in hybrid version increased the output to 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The staple 3.6-liter V6 engine outputted 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. For those seeking maximum power, the 6.4-liter V8 was a monumental choice, producing 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.

The Wrangler also offered varied transfer cases catering to different off-road capabilities. For casual users, the Command-Trac 4WD system in the Sport- or Sahara-trim could suffice. It provided 4WD with a low-range option, but lacked locking differentials and an optimal crawl ratio. Those looking for speed could opt for the Wrangler 392, which featured the Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system. The Rubicon model offered a Rock-Trac transfer case with either part-time or full-time 4WD.

Models generally were equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission, though a six-speed manual was available with the 3.6-liter engine. The 392 was particularly exhilarating to drive, especially with its capacity to chirp its standard 35-inch tires in third gear. Nevertheless, the 4xe PHEV Wrangler, combining a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine with electric components for 21 miles of all-electric range, emerged as a favorite. This combination provided notable power efficiency, matching the torque of the 392 with commendable efficiency.

The 4xe Rubicon, with front and rear locking differentials and the Offroad+ button, was particularly tested and appreciated. The Offroad+ mode, new for 2024, optimized the vehicle's settings for either high-speed dune drives or slow rock crawling. Solid front and rear axles contributed to excellent traction and wheel articulation on rough terrains, further helped by BF Goodrich KO2 tires.

In comparison, the 2024 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Turbo promised varying horsepower depending on fuel type. When filled with premium gas, it offered 256 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 320 lb-ft of torque at 2,500 rpm. Regular gas decreased these numbers slightly to 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, though the torque's power curve was a bit more pronounced. The CX-5 wasn't about raw power, but rather a smooth, controlled power delivery. Stomping the pedal didn't immediately result in a burst of speed but rather a gradual, satisfying acceleration.

Fuel efficiency wasn't its strong suit, with an EPA rating of 24 mpg in combined driving and real-world tests showing approximately 22.9 mpg. Those prioritizing fuel efficiency were better off with the non-turbo 2.5 S variant.

From a driver's perspective, the CX-5 felt distinctively different due to its tall and narrow build, providing excellent outward visibility essential for city driving. Mazda's tweaks over the years, including a re-tuned suspension system and all-wheel drive as standard, improved ride comfort and handling. The G-Vectoring Control Plus technology enhanced cornering stability, creating a driving experience that was both smooth and engaging. On highways, it exhibited a remarkable quietness, while city streets and mountain roads showcased its agility and stability.

Though not an off-road vehicle, the CX-5 proved capable on moderate trails, thanks to its 7.9 inches of ground clearance and Off-Road mode. It also managed towing tasks up to 2,000 pounds without issue.

Form and function

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler, designed with adventure in mind, saw an impressive update to its towing capacity. Initially capped at 3,500 pounds, the Wrangler's new full-float solid rear axle upped this figure to 5,000 pounds for select four-door Rubicon models with the 2.0-liter or 3.6-liter engines and automatic transmission. This enhanced towing capacity allowed for towing larger trailers, side-by-sides, and additional gear, expanding the Wrangler's utility. However, models outside of this specification retained the original 3,500-pound towing limit.

Inside, the Wrangler offered creature comforts like heated seats and steering wheel but lacked ventilated options. A significant improvement for 2024 was the addition of 12-way power-adjustable front seats. These seats maintained functionality even when submerged, making them suitable for fording up to 34 inches of water. The new 30-amp Power Box, utilizing the 4xe's 17.3 kWh battery, facilitated powering various accessories, from tools to portable fridges.

On the other hand, the 2024 Mazda CX-5's interior catered to comfort with standard heated front seats and six-way power adjustment for the driver. Higher trims featured premium touches such as Nappa leather, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel. The cabin quality and design were top-notch, giving off a luxury vibe despite the vehicle's mainstream positioning.

However, the CX-5's interior space was relatively smaller in its segment. It comfortably accommodated four adults, with the rear seats offering adequate support and amenities like air conditioning vents and a fold-down armrest. Cargo space stood at 30 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expandable to 59.3 cubic feet with seats folded. In comparison, the Wrangler's cargo capacity and overall utility leaned more towards outdoor expedition capability rather than luxurious comfort.

Technology

2024 Mazda CX-5

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler embraced technological advancements with a 12.3-inch infotainment screen featuring Uconnect5 as standard across all models. Navigation was optional, but the standard interface boasted cleaner graphics and user-friendly controls. The system's speed had notably improved, particularly evident in the Off-Road Pages, offering detailed real-time vehicle data and trail information. The Trails Offroad feature provided descriptions and difficulty ratings for numerous trails, with a subscription offering access to thousands more.

New features included a wireless hotspot, dual Bluetooth phone pairing, and up to five user profiles. The Wrangler also offered numerous USB ports for versatile connectivity.

Conversely, the 2024 Mazda CX-5 preferred traditional switchgear, avoiding touchscreens to minimize driver distraction. While this approach countered the prevalent touchscreen trend, Mazda incorporated touch functionality for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 10.25-inch display, controlled via a center console knob, featured robust controls and limited need for frequent menu navigation. Mazda Connected Services provided remote functionalities, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and emergency calls.

Several CX-5 trims included a 10-speaker Bose premium sound system, enhancing the premium feel of the interior. Despite its user-friendly and distraction-minimizing philosophy, Mazda's system faced competition from more intuitive, voice-controlled interfaces in the market.

Safety

2024 Jeep Wrangler

5/10

2024 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler took significant steps forward in safety by integrating first- and second-row side-curtain airbags. Standard safety features included forward collision warning on all models except the base. Optional advanced driver aids, such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and park assist, were available across different trims. However, the Wrangler lacked modern assists like lane-keeping and highway assist features.

The Wrangler’s safety ratings for 2024 weren't available at the time. But historical data from 2023 showed four-out-of-five stars from NHTSA for frontal crash protection and three-out-of-five for rollover protection. IIHS rated the four-door Wrangler as "Good" in roof strength and seating but "Moderate" for frontal and side crashes. These ratings might improve with the new side curtain airbags.

Conversely, the 2024 Mazda CX-5 came equipped with comprehensive ADAS as standard, encompassing adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Advanced safety features like adaptive headlights, traffic sign recognition, and Traffic Jam Assist were included in higher trims. The top variant offered a suite of monitoring and assistance features, further enhancing safety.

Mazda's consistent focus on safety earned the CX-5 high marks from NHTSA with five-star overall ratings, except a four-star rating for rollover resistance. While it traditionally secured IIHS's Top Safety Pick designation, it hadn't earned this accolade for 2024, despite maintaining high safety standards.
