2024 Chevrolet Traverse Reviews Summary

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse has gone from being something of a wallflower to becoming one of the more stand-out choices among midsize SUVs with three rows of seating. That’s because Chevrolet’s design and engineering team did its homework when it came time to update this third generation of the Traverse, a model that has featured in the brand’s lineup since its introduction back for the 2009 model year.

The 2024 Chevy Traverse is taller, wider, and longer than the outgoing variant. It’s also much more memorable to look at; following current SUV trends, Chevrolet gave the Traverse a more rugged appearance that borrows from both the full-size Tahoe SUV and Sierra pickup truck. Styling is always subjective, but in this instance, we think it’s fair to say Chevy got things right.

Verdict: More important than any additional visual bravado is that the 2024 Traverse has been improved in countless other ways. It has more standard driver aids, such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. There is more space for passengers, particularly those seated in the third row. And the infotainment system gets a much larger touchscreen.

2025 Land Rover Defender Reviews Summary

The 2025 Defender lineup includes the 90, 110, and 130. The 90 is the short and stubby two-door, the 110 is the standard four-door, and the 130 is the extended four-door. They’re available with turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines, as well as a turbocharged or supercharged V8. They’re all equipped for off-roading right out of the box, but you can add more tech for more challenging situations. The big news for this model year is the high-performance 2025 Land Rover Defender OCTA.

Verdict: There is a Land Rover Defender for almost anyone, and any of them can take you farther into the wilderness than you expect. They’re rugged but refined, comfortable yet capable, and plenty of fun to drive. But the Defender comes at a cost, both on the window sticker and at the pump.

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

2025 Land Rover Defender

8/10

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse was available in four trims: LS, LT, Z71, and RS, with the Z71 being the new addition aimed at those interested in moderate off-roading. During test drives near Atlanta, it was clear that the Z71 was not designed for extreme off-road adventures like the Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco but was capable of handling rugged terrain. The Traverse's pricing was competitive, starting at $38,995 for the LS and reaching $55,595 for the RS, which came with nearly every available feature. The Z71 model, priced at $47,795, featured 18-inch alloy wheels and Iridescent Pearl Tricoat paint, with a Jet Black interior accented by "Torch Red" details. While synthetic leather seating was optional, the standard cloth seats were comfortable and breathable.

The 2025 Land Rover Defender, particularly the 110 four-door model, struck a balance in design, offering a rugged appeal with extensive customization options. Base prices ranged from $58,525 for the Defender 90 to $120,525 for the 130 V8, with the new Defender OCTA priced at $153,625. The test vehicle, a Defender 130 in X trim, included the Extended Black Exterior Pack and advanced off-roading technology. It featured 20-inch wheels with Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires and options like the Towing Pack and Climate Pack, bringing the MSRP to $106,092. The Gondwana Stone paint did not complement the orange brake calipers, and the 20-inch wheels were less suited for off-road adventures. Inside, the Defender X boasted premium Windsor hides and Kvadrat fabric, maintaining an industrial theme with quality materials.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse replaced its previous 310-horsepower V6 engine with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque. This new engine offered 18 more horsepower and 50 more lb-ft of torque than the V6. All-wheel drive was optional, with the Z71 featuring a more advanced system. The Traverse provided acceptable acceleration and passing power, with a pleasant exhaust growl. The steering was adequate, and the ride was smooth, even with the Z71's all-terrain tires and extra ground clearance. The brakes were progressive, and the stop-and-start feature was seamless. Fuel economy estimates ranged from 18 mpg city to 26 highway for the Limited with FWD.

The 2025 Land Rover Defender's test vehicle featured a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine with a mild-hybrid system, producing 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. It had an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD with a low-range setting. The Defender 130 X accelerated to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds and had a maximum tow rating of 8,200 pounds. The adaptive air suspension, hill descent control, and Terrain Response 2 driving modes enhanced its off-road capabilities. Despite its off-road prowess, the Defender 130 was primarily driven on pavement, where it handled well but was not suited for enthusiastic driving on twisty roads. The Defender's fuel economy was lower than expected, with an observed 16.2 mpg.

Form and function

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse offered seating for eight in the base LS model, while the LT, Z71, and RS featured second-row captain’s chairs for seven-passenger seating. The Smart Slide second-row seats were easy to use, and the power-folding third row was standard on the RS. Cargo volume was 22.9 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 96 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. The Traverse had ample storage nooks, including a hidden area under the center console. Visibility was generally good, though the third row had limited views.

The 2025 Land Rover Defender 130 provided spacious seating across three rows, with 12-way power-adjustable front seats featuring heating and ventilation. Visibility was excellent, though the square side mirrors seemed undersized. The Defender X had a panoramic sunroof and a fixed glass panel over the third row, creating an open feel. Storage was plentiful in the front but less accommodating in the rear. The Defender 130's third-row seat was heated and comfortable, with a side-hinged cargo door that was heavy and awkward. Cargo space was 15.3 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 89 cubic feet with all rear seats folded.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse featured a 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen, replacing the previous 8-inch screen. It was complemented by an 11-inch digital instrument display, both running on Google-based software with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The wireless charging pad was effective, and physical controls for volume and HVAC functions were appreciated. The Traverse also offered Super Cruise, a hands-free driving aid, which expanded its functionality to single-lane roadways.

The 2025 Land Rover Defender was equipped with the Pivi Pro infotainment system, featuring an 11.4-inch touchscreen and a configurable digital driver display. It included wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM 360L, and connected services. Pivi Pro's response and accuracy had improved, making it more intuitive. The Defender also had a head-up display, ClearSight digital rearview mirror, and a surround-view camera system. The Towing Pack added a hands-free trailer reverse-steering system.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse had not been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS at the time of the test drive. However, it came with a comprehensive suite of driver aids, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot warning, and adaptive cruise control. These systems were not tested during the drive but provided peace of mind.

The 2025 Land Rover Defender featured several driver aids, such as automatic high-beam headlights, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assist. The lane-keep assist was decisive, though it occasionally attempted to steer the vehicle into a turnout area. The adaptive cruise control operated smoothly, with minor issues in heavy traffic. Crash-test ratings were unavailable, as NHTSA and IIHS typically do not test low-volume models.
