2024 BMW X5 Reviews Summary

Our test vehicle for this review was the X5 xDrive50e, the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of the X5 midsize SUV, but it’s just one of several X5 models you can buy. Those with 40i in their name feature a satisfying turbocharged six-cylinder engine (with electric assist in the plug-in hybrid), while the M60i features a turbocharged V8 engine. Maximum performance is available in the comically fun X5 M Competition. Drive any of them, though, and it’s easy to understand why the X5 is BMW’s best-selling model.

Verdict: Newer BMWs are losing what has always made this automaker’s cars and SUVs appealing to people who like to drive. Fortunately, the 2024 BMW X5 hasn’t succumbed to the trend. In xDrive50e specification, it remains a delight to drive while supplying about 40 miles of electric-only range before its gasoline-fueled turbo six turns on.

2024 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Redesigning a long-running vehicle requires a big swing, and after fourteen years since the second-generation model debuted, building the all-new 2024 GX was a tall order. Lexus’s engineers struck out to make this midsize SUV better in every way: better tech, a better engine, more capability, and more luxury. They succeeded.

Verdict: Comfortable but rugged, the thirsty, body-on-frame Lexus GX isn’t the right luxury SUV for every shopper. However, for those in the market for this particular blend of lavish capability, it may be the best option on the market.

2024 BMW X5

9/10

2024 Lexus GX

8/10

The 2024 BMW X5, last redesigned in 2019, maintained a timeless appeal, though the M Sport treatment was not universally appreciated, giving it a station wagon-like appearance. The test vehicle featured optional 21-inch “741M” wheels with staggered-width summer tires, which were considered a worthwhile upgrade despite the potential cost of tire replacement. The X5 offered a range of powertrains, including a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, a turbo-six PHEV powertrain, and a turbocharged V8 engine, with various trim packages and equipment options available. The xDrive50e M Sport model tested came with Brooklyn Grey paint, optional wheels, and all available equipment packages, priced at $88,075. The 2024 model received a light styling refresh, aligning it with other BMW models, and introduced the BMW Curved Display, modernizing the interior while retaining high-quality materials and construction.

In contrast, the 2024 Lexus GX 550 underwent a significant redesign, moving away from the softer, rounded corners of the previous model to embrace a more geometric styling. The spindle grille was less pronounced, and the front end featured standard triple-beam LED headlights. The GX's design was more aggressive, with a flat hood and minimal character lines, enhancing visibility for off-road driving. The GX was offered in six trim levels, with the Premium+ expected to be the best-seller. Luxury models focused on comfort, while the Overtrail trims emphasized off-roading capabilities. The interior combined luxury with utilitarian materials, featuring a large 14-inch touchscreen and physical controls for off-road functions. The GX was less luxurious than some competitors but was built for durability and off-road prowess.

The 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e PHEV saw significant improvements, including a new mild-hybrid six-cylinder engine and a more powerful electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission. The lithium-ion battery pack had a capacity of 19.2 kWh, doubling the maximum AC charging rate to 7.4 kW. The PHEV offered 38 miles of electric-only driving and 22 mpg in combined driving. It produced 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, accelerating to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. The adaptive damping air suspension masked the vehicle's weight, and the 21-inch wheels did not compromise ride quality. The X5 excelled in handling, with quick steering and excellent visibility. During testing, it achieved an average fuel economy of 38.8 mpg over 95.5 miles, proving to be a well-rounded choice for those seeking performance and efficiency.

The 2024 Lexus GX replaced its V8 engine with a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6, producing 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. The torque was available low in the rev range, aiding off-road performance. Built on the GA-F truck platform, the GX had a stiffer chassis, improving stability on and off-road. It featured a 10-speed automatic transmission, full-time 4WD, and a locking Torsen limited-slip center differential. The Overtrail trims added a locking rear differential and the E-KDSS suspension system, enhancing wheel articulation and stability. The GX performed well in acceleration and braking, with a composed ride on-road despite its off-road capabilities. Off-road testing was limited due to weather conditions, but the GX demonstrated its potential for rugged terrain.

Form and function

2024 Lexus GX

The 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e offered a spacious interior with room for five passengers and a cargo area of 33.1 cubic feet, expandable to 71.2 cubic feet. The split liftgate design provided a seating area but required stretching to access deep cargo. The test vehicle featured Sensafin artificial leather upholstery, standard sport seats, and the Climate Comfort Package, which included 20-way power-adjustable front seats, four-zone climate control, and heated features. Rear-seat passengers enjoyed comfort and a panoramic sunroof. The X5 no longer offered a third-row seat, requiring a step up to the X7 for that feature.

The 2024 Lexus GX's interior was minimalist and sophisticated, with fewer physical buttons and rotary knobs for climate control. It provided comfortable seating for six-foot-tall adults in the first and second rows, with 41.2 inches of legroom in the front and 36.7 inches in the second row. The third row, available in Premium and Luxury models, was tight for adults. The GX excelled in cargo space, offering 10.3 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 40.2 cubic feet with it folded, and a total of 76.9 cubic feet. Overtrail models offered even more space, with 45.6 cubic feet behind the second row and 90.5 cubic feet total.

Technology

The 2024 BMW X5 featured the BMW Curved Display, combining a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel with a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It ran BMW Operating System 8.5, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM 360L, connected services, and over-the-air updates. The Intelligent Personal Assistant, however, struggled with voice recognition, leading to inaccurate directions. The head-up display effectively conveyed data, and the navigation system included an augmented video function. Despite the voice assistant's shortcomings, the technology suite was comprehensive.

The 2024 Lexus GX boasted a 14-inch touchscreen, USB-C ports, and a wireless charging pad. The Lexus Interface infotainment system supported Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with Drive Connect and Remote Connect services available. The GX came with a 10-speaker audio system, with a 21-speaker Mark Levinson stereo available on higher trims. The infotainment system was user-friendly, but subscription costs for certain features after the initial trial period were a consideration for long-term ownership.

Safety

2024 Lexus GX

8/10

The 2024 BMW X5 introduced the Highway Assistant hands-free driving system, which required deliberate activation. It performed well in specific conditions but could behave unexpectedly in moderate traffic. The adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assistance worked effectively, though occasional errant braking occurred. The X5 received high ratings from the IIHS, but lower headlight ratings prevented an award. The NHTSA gave it a four-star overall crash-test rating.

The 2024 Lexus GX saw significant safety improvements with the standard Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, offering pre-collision detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-tracing assist, and road-sign recognition. The proactive driving assist feature enhanced safety during highway turns. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were not yet available, but the modern GA-F architecture and comprehensive ADAS instilled confidence in its safety.
