2023 Acura RDX Reviews Summary

The Acura RDX may not be the newest luxury SUV, but it can still compete against newer rivals thanks to its strong performance, high levels of comfort, and relatively affordable price. We're no fans of its infotainment interface, but we think most shoppers will eventually get used to its idiosyncrasies.

2024 MINI Countryman Reviews Summary

The new Countryman arrives next year and we know at least one version of the 2025 Countryman will be electric, if not all of them. In the meantime, the 2024 Mini Countryman enters its eighth year in second-generation spec. The base Cooper model comes only in Classic trim this year, the Signature trim package adds a standard navigation system, and the Cooper SE plug-in hybrid is more appealing thanks to a lower-priced base version and more standard features in the top-of-the-line Iconic trim package.

Look and feel

2023 Acura RDX

6/10

2024 MINI Countryman

9/10

The 2023 Acura RDX was known for its sharp, angular style, which, while distinctive, did not make it stand out dramatically from its competitors. The front featured the signature Acura grille, which, after years of evolution, seemed to be showing its age. The sleek wraparound headlights and deep creases in the bodywork gave the RDX a sporty and aggressive appearance. The side profile was marked by a distinctive character line that suggested forward movement, even when stationary. However, the rear design was more conventional, resembling many other small SUVs.

Inside, the RDX took a different approach from the horizontal dashboard trend, opting for a vertical layout. The center stack flowed into the console, dominated by gear-selector buttons and a drive-mode dial, emphasizing performance. The 10.2-inch infotainment display sat atop the dash, with a digital center display flanked by analog gauges. While the interior wasn't as modern as some rivals, it offered a familiar feel for those averse to the latest glass cockpit designs. However, those seeking cutting-edge design might have found it lacking.

The 2024 MINI Countryman embraced its playful nature, showcasing classic Mini styling cues, including an erect wraparound windshield and a floating roof. It proudly displayed its British heritage with Union Jack tail lights. The Countryman offered numerous customization options, from paint treatments to wheel designs. The lineup included various models, each with distinct powertrains, from the underpowered Cooper to the high-performance John Cooper Works. The Cooper SE was a plug-in hybrid with limited electric range.

Our test vehicle, a Cooper S with Iconic trim, featured dark-tinted privacy glass, adaptive damping suspension, and 19-inch wheels. The MSRP was $41,945, including destination charges. The Iconic trim added premium leather, power-adjustable front seats, a head-up display, and wireless smartphone charging. Despite its digital instrumentation and 8.8-inch touchscreen, the Countryman retained its classic Mini character. The dual-panel moonroof allowed ample natural light into the cabin, enhancing the unique experience of being in a Mini.

Performance

2023 Acura RDX

6/10

2024 MINI Countryman

7/10

The 2023 Acura RDX was equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, it came standard with front-wheel drive, while the advanced SH-AWD system was available on all models and standard on top trims. The RDX accelerated to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds, offering a satisfying throttle response and a pleasing engine sound. The transmission efficiently selected gears, and the brake pedal provided a firm, reassuring feel. The RDX's handling was confident, with minimal body roll and excellent traction from the AWD system. It offered a sporty driving experience without compromising ride comfort, making it an attractive option for many shoppers.

In contrast, the 2024 MINI Countryman offered a range of powertrains. The John Cooper Works model featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 301 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed sport automatic transmission. It accelerated to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, making it the choice for speed enthusiasts. The Cooper S, with a 189-horsepower engine, provided a zippy and athletic feel, reaching 60 mph in 7.2 seconds. The Countryman excelled in daily driving scenarios, though it wasn't suited for off-road adventures. The Cooper S achieved an EPA rating of 28 mpg in combined driving, but our test averaged 25.4 mpg. The Countryman was fun to drive, but for spirited driving, the JCW or a Mini Clubman was recommended.

Form and function

2023 Acura RDX

7/10

2024 MINI Countryman

6/10

The 2023 Acura RDX offered ample space for front-seat occupants, with additional power adjustments for side bolsters and thigh extension in top trims. The seats were generously cushioned, providing comfort on long drives. Heated and ventilated seats quickly adjusted to temperature needs. Rear seats accommodated average-sized adults, though taller passengers might find headroom limited. The panoramic sunroof enhanced the cabin's open feel. Cargo space was generous, with 31.1 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expandable to 79.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The RDX provided various storage options for smaller items, though the center stack design could have been more space-efficient.

The 2024 MINI Countryman accommodated four adults comfortably, with enough luggage space for a week-long trip. The Iconic trim added dual-zone climate control, premium leather, and power-adjustable heated front seats. The steering wheel was a pleasure to grip, and the rear seat offered ample legroom. However, fitting a fifth passenger was challenging. Visibility was excellent, and the Countryman's compact size made parking easy. Interior storage was reasonable, though the smartphone charging pad blocked access to the tray beneath it. Cargo space was limited, with 17.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expandable to 47.6 cubic feet with the seats folded.

Technology

2023 Acura RDX

4/10

2024 MINI Countryman

8/10

The 2023 Acura RDX featured a touchpad infotainment controller, which was challenging to use, especially while driving. The dashtop display was not a touchscreen, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto improved the experience by allowing easier navigation. The system had sharp graphics and quick responses, but the interface was one of the least user-friendly. Standard features included a Wi-Fi hotspot and remote monitoring via the Acuralink app. The top A-Spec Advanced trim offered a 16-speaker ELS audio system with excellent sound quality.

The 2024 MINI Countryman wasn't a tech powerhouse but offered practical features. The digital instrumentation display and head-up display provided useful information. The 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, housed in a round casing, used BMW's iDrive technology, offering multiple interaction methods. The system was easy to navigate once familiar, though it lacked Android Auto connectivity. The Iconic trim included a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, delivering impressive audio quality.

Safety

2024 MINI Countryman

4/10

The 2023 Acura RDX received top safety ratings, with five stars from the NHTSA for overall and side crash protection, and a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keep assist. The Technology package added parking sensors, while the Advance package included a surround-view camera and head-up display. The systems generally performed well, though lane-keep assist was better suited for straight highways.

The 2024 MINI Countryman had limited advanced driving assistance systems. Standard features included forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Rear parking sensors and an emergency SOS call button were also included. Adaptive cruise control was optional on higher trims. The lane-departure warning system provided subtle feedback. The IIHS rated the Countryman as Good in crashworthiness evaluations, though some tests were incomplete.
