2023 Acura RDX Reviews Summary

The Acura RDX may not be the newest luxury SUV, but it can still compete against newer rivals thanks to its strong performance, high levels of comfort, and relatively affordable price. We're no fans of its infotainment interface, but we think most shoppers will eventually get used to its idiosyncrasies.

2023 Lexus RX Hybrid Reviews Summary

During the past three years, the RX 450h hybrid has accounted for an average of 15.4% of all Lexus RX sales in the U.S. Now, a redesigned 2023 Lexus RX is set to go on sale by the end of 2022, and the automaker will offer three hybrid models: the RX 350h, RX 450h+, and the RX 500h F Sport Performance. Based on time spent driving two of these three new 2023 Lexus RX Hybrid models, we expect them to at least double, if not triple, the previous-generation RX 450h’s share of sales. As long as the price is right, of course.

Look and feel

2023 Acura RDX

6/10

2023 Lexus RX Hybrid

8/10

The 2023 Acura RDX was noted for its sharp, angular style, which, while unique, did not make it stand out significantly from its competitors. The front featured the signature Acura grille, which some felt was showing its age, flanked by sleek wraparound headlights. The bodywork and hood had deep creases, giving the nose a sporty and aggressive appearance. The side of the RDX was characterized by a distinctive character line that suggested forward movement, even when stationary. The rear, however, was more conventional, resembling many other small SUVs. Inside, the RDX had a vertical cockpit layout, with a center stack of controls flowing into the center console, emphasizing performance. The interior, while not as modern as some rivals, offered a familiar feel for those averse to new glass cockpits.

In contrast, the 2023 Lexus RX Hybrid presented a more minimalistic and contemporary interior design. The RX 350h Luxury model featured beautiful Macadamia semi-aniline leather and Ash Bamboo wood trim, while the RX 500h F Sport Performance had a sportier all-black interior with artificial suede and dark gray aluminum trim. The exterior of the RX models, though not considered gorgeous, had a blunt-nosed design with a wheelbase stretch that reduced the rear overhang, making the SUV appear smaller. The RX 500h F Sport Performance distinguished itself with a blacked-out grille, matte-black wheels, and aggressive bumper designs. Overall, the RX Hybrid offered a cleaner, more modern look compared to the RDX.

Performance

2023 Acura RDX

6/10

2023 Lexus RX Hybrid

8/10

The 2023 Acura RDX was powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. It was paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and came standard with front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available. The RDX accelerated to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds, offering immediate throttle response and a pleasing engine sound. The handling was sporty, with well-managed body roll and a comfortable ride, making it an attractive option for many shoppers.

The 2023 Lexus RX Hybrid offered two hybrid versions: the RX 350h and the RX 500h F Sport Performance. The RX 350h, with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, produced 246 hp and 233 lb-ft of torque, achieving 36 mpg in combined driving. It accelerated to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds. The RX 500h F Sport Performance, with a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, delivered 366 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, reaching 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. It featured an adaptive damping suspension and a Dynamic Rear Steering system, providing a more athletic driving experience. However, its fuel economy was lower, averaging 20.9 mpg. The RX 350h was preferred for its better fuel efficiency and secure handling.

Form and function

2023 Acura RDX

7/10

2023 Lexus RX Hybrid

7/10

The 2023 Acura RDX offered ample space in the front seats, with additional power adjustments in top trims. The rear seats accommodated average-sized adults comfortably, though taller passengers might find headroom limited. The cargo space was generous, with 31.1 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 79.8 cubic feet with the seats folded. The interior featured various storage options, though the center stack design was seen as taking up unnecessary space.

The 2023 Lexus RX Hybrid provided a comfortable interior, with the RX 350h Luxury model offering ten-way power-adjustable front seats and premium leather. The RX 500h F Sport Performance had eight-way power-adjustable seats with larger side bolsters. The rear seats offered excellent leg support, though headroom was tight due to the battery pack placement. The cargo space was improved, with 29.6 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 46.2 cubic feet with the seat folded, though it still fell short compared to some rivals.

Technology

2023 Acura RDX

4/10

2023 Lexus RX Hybrid

6/10

The 2023 Acura RDX featured a touchpad infotainment controller, which was challenging to use, especially while driving. The system improved with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, allowing for easier operation. The infotainment system had sharp graphics and quick responses, and the RDX came with a Wi-Fi hotspot and remote monitoring via the Acuralink app. The top trim included a 16-speaker ELS audio system.

The 2023 Lexus RX Hybrid introduced a new infotainment system, requiring a subscription for connected services. The system included a cloud-based navigation system and an Intelligent Assistant. While the assistant worked well, there were some issues with screen reflections and menu navigation. The RX Hybrid also offered a head-up display with dual-function touch-sensing control pads on the steering wheel, though these were challenging to use with polarized sunglasses.

Safety

2023 Acura RDX

7/10

2023 Lexus RX Hybrid

8/10

The 2023 Acura RDX received high safety ratings, with five stars from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. It came with standard advanced safety features, including forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. The Technology package added parking sensors, while the Advance package included a surround-view camera and a head-up display.

The 2023 Lexus RX Hybrid featured Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, with new motorcycle detection, evasive steering assistance, and intersection turn assistance. It also had Proactive Driving Assist, which maintained a safe following distance and recharged the battery through regenerative braking. While the safety systems generally worked well, there were some issues with the front cross-traffic alert and curve-speed reduction features. The RX Hybrid also offered Traffic Jam Assist and Advanced Park, though these were not tested.
